A musical archive of Australian lives

Purple Butterfly Illustration

At its core, Life Songs is building a living musical archive of Australian lives. The process begins with a personal biography: a professional songwriter sits with an older Australian and transforms their memories into a beautifully produced, original song. This approach captures three essential layers:

  1. The factual life: what happened.

  2. The remembered life: what the participant chose to recall.

  3. The emotionally interpreted life: what a human artist heard at the absolute heart of their story.

In 2024, in partnership with Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA), we completed  six Life Songs as proof of concept. The songs revealed that toward the end of a life, people's stories inevitably come home to relationship, belonging, and love rather than achievement.

In an era dominated by generative AI, our project insists on the human-only integrity principle – where the artistic encounter of one human listening to another is itself a critical part of the cultural artefact.

While these individual songs offer profound personal legacies for families, we see a much broader vision. Collected over thousands of lives, they will aggregate into a human musical history of Australia – a collective cultural memory documenting how a generation felt and understood itself.
